About Chester Hill Lookout
Chester Hill Lookout is located in the Rosedale neighbourhood, one of Toronto’s most historic and affluent areas. Originally, this area was part of the traditional lands of the Mississaugas of the Credit River. As Toronto grew and expanded, the lookout became a beloved spot for residents to enjoy the natural beauty and skyline of their city.
It’s just up the road from another popular view of the Toronto Skyline, Riverdale Park East. Both provide great views of the skyline during sunset.
The lookout itself was constructed in the late 1950s during the development of the Don Valley Parkway (DVP). To accommodate this project, Chester Hill Road was shortened, creating the lookout and the hillside leading down to the DVP. The land extending from the lookout to the DVP is owned by the Toronto Regional Conservation Authority (TRCA) but is leased by the City of Toronto.
What makes Chester Hill Lookout particularly appealing is its simplicity and atmosphere. There are no major crowds or commercial distractions—just a railing, a bend in the road, and a panoramic view that feels personal. It’s a favorite among photographers and locals who appreciate a quieter moment with the city, whether capturing long exposures at night or just watching the skyline transition from day to dusk. The calm, neighborhood setting adds to its charm, making it less of a tourist stop and more of a local secret worth experiencing.
If you’re ever there, keep your eye out for the Chester Hill Kitty Cat. It’s feline that I’m sure belongs to someone in the area. It’s been there pretty much every time I’ve been.
My last important tip, leave no trace. Please utilize the garbage can they’ve finally added to the lookout for your empty coffee cups and beer cans.
Until next time…
